Leadership for Renewable Energy

Renewable energy needs  a huge effort in leadership to bring about change that is positive for the environment.  In truth, we have to change our whole infrastructure to produce the energy savings and efficiencies needed to effectively combat climate change.

Leadership in business  includes leaders and managers who are promoting sustainability or eco-entrepreneurs who are setting up businesses that market environmentally responsible products and services. In government environmental leadership refers to those leaders at an international, national or local level who are working for environmental change. But we also have to be clear about what I mean by positive environmental change.  What are the criteria we believe in

Eco-effectiveness

The Natural Step

Zero Waste

Renewable Energy alone

Minimal ecological footprint

Preserving biodiversity or increasing it

Reverence for Nature

Precautionary Principle – avoid actions that have the potential for damage, even if we cannot exactly predict the consequences

Whole Systems Change – radical change

We need to be clear about what is required and then create a philosophy and set of practices that encourages it. Leadership is the process of achieving this type of change.

Is anyone doing it?

What are the skills required?

How can it take place?

What is the vision?

What are the rewards of this change?

Is it a sacrifice or is it beneficial?

Needs a clear and coherent approach – like treatment for a patient. Diagnosis, Prognosis and treatment which is clear, rational and practicable. Our earth is dying – how do we save it? Lets be honest – the sort of changes suggested by most people are ineffectual, too slow and too weak. We know we have to do this so lets get on with it. The problem is not going to go away, it will get worse. Our generation needs to provide the leadership. We need a clear vision, clear goals and a coherent strategy for achieving these goals.

Strategies

Rationing

Taxation

Law

Education

Leading from what to what?

From materialism to shallow ecology to deep ecology – 3 steps

Or from materialism to deep ecology?

Efficiency to effectiveness

Reform or whole system change?

The nature of change is complex. Leadership is many things – a state of mind, skills, beliefs, behaviours, process, system. We need to operate at every level with every resource and skill we possess.
